Sunday Bridges - This Time Next Year

”Sava
This time next year we won't be millioners but we'll have a new bridge and congestion on other bridges will be just a bad memories. "The bridge over Sava" will be one of the largest single pylon cable-stayed bridges in the world

Bridge construction works had certain impact on Pygmy Cormorant, a globally threatened species, roosting in the willow stands adjacent to the construction site. In 2008, the observed number of birds was decreased for 25% due to initial disturbance caused by construction works. According to the "Sava Bridge Project", from 2009 the trend has been positive and the number of birds has been increased.

Puzzled

”Belgrade
In the city's main pedestrian street (Knez Mihailova), a variety of people can be seen. They often have nothing in common until they get amazed by some street performer's work.

What's Playing Tonight?

”Jugoslovensko
The Yugoslav Drama Theatre (JDP) is my favourite. Has a diverse artistic policy that includes both new writing and contemporary reappraisals of classics. The theatre building was burnt in a fire for two times during the 20th century. After the last fire in 1997 the theatre was closed until 2003 when the new glass-covered building was built.

- My face is my fortune, Sir - she said.

Odyssey Dawn

”belgrade
Remains of Army headquarters in downtown Belgrade, bombed during NATO air strikes in 1999. Dictator on one side, strongest military force on the other. Innocent civilians in between. The name of the operation is always poetic. Ours was "Merciful Angel". Hope that ordinary people in Libya will not suffer much.

For Nippon

”serbia
Organized public gathering in Republic square aimed to express empathy and support to the people of Japan. A lot of people in Serbia feel moral obligation to provide their support due to a significant role of the Japanese funds in the economic transition of our country.

Still for some reason, much less we care for tragedies in the "third world" countries. Indonesia, Haiti, Chile. Even China. Hundreds of thousands of lives. No Facebook groups for support, no public gatherings. Do we think that suffering is normal for the poor?

Skywatch Friday - Clouds will clear

I like when the streets are named after famous non-Serbian people, too. This street is named after Tadeusz Kosciuszko, the 18th century Polish freedom fighter. He fought in the American Revolution and later led the Polish uprising against Russia.

Outside Poland and besides Belgrade, there are also streets named after Kosciuszko in Saint Petersburg (Russia), Budapest (Hungary), Vilnius (Lithuania), Geelong and Canberra (Australia) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

RoboCops or Ninja Turtles? It might look terrifying but it's not so serious. It's "just" a preventive measure when a "high-risk" football match is played.

ABC Wednesday - Information on Increase

Electronic display on the building in Republic Square showing up to date news. The news is that after a third explosion at Fukushima nuclear plant, radiation levels have been increased. Hard not to think of people whose small and simple lives were completely changed in one day.

Islanders

The anchored boat turned into the cafe is called "Brodic" (a small boat, in Serbian). Great place to spend the afternoon. It's like an island in the flood of industrial structures on the Sava River banks.

An ordinary Monday afternoon. The trolleybus stopped at red light and absorbed a bit of solar energy.

Trolleybus wires are the inevitable part of the Belgrade landscape. Their aesthetic value is doubtful but sometimes they can serve to break the monotony of composition.

March Theme Day: My favourite part of town

This view is exactly what I have in mind when I'm miles away from home, thinking of Belgrade. It's a small part of the Old town, limited to some 15 streets. Every street there is my favourite. And  wherever I go, on my way back, when I cross the river and see this view - I know I'm back home.
