Storyteller

This was a 120 years old tree (Sophora Japonica), planted in the 1860s. I can only imagine the variety of memories the tree had from the turbulent history of this city. Due to age, it was cut down in 2008 and the "Sophora bench" was made of it and placed above.

Avant-garde Experiments

This was supposed to be the Evangelistic church, financed by the German minority before the WWII. As it was never completed or sanctified - in 1989 it was reconstructed and transformed into a theatre (Bitef). They consider themselves "the most daring among the Belgrade theatres with exploring artists and experiments, creating culture without strictly following the dominant cultural models".

Bored?

Zeleni Venac ("Green Wreath") is the major bus terminal station, with more than 20 public transportation lines connecting the downtown with suburbs. Historically, it was a pond and a hunting area. Nowadays it's crowded and noisy place. Luckily, it doesn't take long for a bus to come.

ABC Wednesday - Q is for Question Mark

Znak Pitanja kafana
"?" is the name of the oldest restaurant in the city, built in 1823. It got its name in 1892 after the church authorities protested over the owner's intention to name the restaurant "At the Saborna church", not wanting the church name to be mentioned in the name of the restaurant. As a temporary solution, the owner put the question mark sign on the door and soon it became the official name of the place.

As one of the most famous landmarks, "?" is a very touristy place and is mentioned in every travel guide. But as a local, I would rather recommend some other traditional restaurants.

Changing Times

The same crossroad nowadays and in 1930s. The only city's preserved mosque is in the background, unchanged for centuries. The building on the right dates from 1910 and was owned by a merchant. Nowadays it is city-owned, houses 9 apartments and is not in good condition, waits for reconstruction. The shape of the dome was changed.
Times are changing. This part of city was once called Zerek. Today, it's called just Dorcol.

Skywatch Friday - You Can't Hide

Brankova Street is a typical street with the "urban canyon" effect. The narrow street bordered with high buildings has its own environment, especially in terms of air pollution and noise. As you head towards the canyon exit, the afternoon sun blinds you. No place to hide during this test of your patience.

ABC Wednesday - P is for People and Players

Audience at the Serbia Open tournament
A victory of the player they rooted for made them forget their own personal disappointments and experience the player's success as their own. They went home satisfied and relaxed and there's nothing wrong with that.
